Zombie Apocalypse ~ What nightmares are made of…
Have you ever had one of those dreams or nightmares that won’t let go of you? I had this scary wacky dream about zombies last night. It woke me up at 0230 from a dead sleep. It was the type that made it really hard to close my eyes again. I got up made sure the alarm was on and checked on the kids. I did fall back to sleep, but damn if that dream didn’t start again where it left off. That never happens when I want it too (hot man on the beach, ahem). No, never then. I woke up two more times after that. What was my subconscious trying to tell me? Apparently, it wanted me to know something or make a decision about something. But, really-- Zombies?
I was working on an interview prior to going to bed last night. The last question was-- what 3 things would you take with you to survive a Zombie Apocalypse? Apparently, my brain took that quite literally and dumped me in the middle of one. The power of suggestion – I love it.
I have a creative mind, thus the very reason I’m a writer. Sometimes my dreams help me flesh out a character, scene or plot line. Yes, I do have undead in my Key to the Cursed series, they’re called revens, cursed human souls. The zombies in my dream were high functioning and cunning. They were talking to me, which made it even scarier. A zombie that can outsmart you is not a good thing. They are much easier to handle when they are dull-minded flesh eaters, easy to kill and can’t sneak up on you with their shuffling slow gate.
I know that zombies are supposed to reflect our psychological fear of losing control—becoming mindless and unable to control our own destinies. Boy, that’s deep. LOL. In my dream my fear wasn’t about becoming “infected” but what these creatures could take from me – my loved ones, my supplies, my shelter. The fear of not being able to defend what was mine.
This revelation started me thinking about Kendra in Soul Awakened. She’s a petite little thing that has been protected her whole life. Her fears would not be much different than my own. She doesn’t have the physical strength like her sisters to fight off the revens. She has already lost her father to the curse. How can she defend what she holds dear?
My dream had the answer. It’s less about physical strength to ward off zombies. It’s intelligence which Kendra has an abundance. Fear is a good thing – it is a basic instinct that keeps us alive. Not unlike ourselves, characters in a novel need to be fearful of something. It’s this fear that makes them believable and real to us.
So, zombies – BEWARE!
So, in thanks for tolerating my psychological ramblings, I’m giving away an ebook copy of Soul Reborn, 1st book in the Key to the Cursed series. I want to thank Sam, Elena, and Rhonda (awesome ladies) for having me over to visit again. If you get a chance, check out Elena’s reviews of Soul Reborn and Soul Awakened. Hopefully, my revens won’t give you nightmares.
How to enter: Ever have a crazy dream or nightmare? If you don’t feel comfortable sharing, just tell me what 3 things you would take with you to survive a Zombie Apocalypse?
Oh, I almost forgot to mention, I have two huge giveaways going on for Soul Awakened’s release: Soul Awakened’s Book Tour Kindle Fire HD giveaway and 3-Goddess Book Release Kindle Paperwhite giveaway.

Dude! That picture is CREEPY! I had a nightmare just last night. I can't remember a lot of it, but the one thing I remember most is that I was wearing a dress and I had forgotten to shave my legs. I spent the whole time running from monsters while trying to figure out a way to make my dress longer. And then... there was a knee inspection. It was terrifying.

Dorothy.

I don't blame you, being in a dress with unshaved legs is a nightmare. LOL.

Our subconscious works in mysterious ways, doesn't it.

Thanks for sharing,

Jean

I am one of those people that wakes up from nightmares all the time and I can never really remember what they are about. I tend to wake up and think someone is standing in my room or someone is in the house. I always have trouble sleeping after those. As for the zombie apocalypse. I need my five kids of course and they only count as one item. Also my husband cuz he would take care of us all and defend us from the zombies. Lastly, I would bring a lifetime supply of energy/protein bars to feed us all. somehow someone will have to stuff the Kindle I want to win in their pants or something so we can have that too. lol
