This is my first review in a long time. I guess I haven’t felt the need to express my feelings towards a book of late. I didn’t go into Darker After Midnight planning on reviewing, but this book just dragged me down from my book high and I wanted to share my feelings.
It’s been so long between each book that I forget the ongoing story line, but it’s not hard to pick it up again as you read along. I do know though that I liked Chase and was looking forward to his book. I remember thinking he deserved his happy ending after all that went down with Elise. But if you going into this book thinking ‘Yay Chase is getting his story!” well, um.... it doesn’t happen that way so much. The story is more based around Dragos and his never ending attempt to take over the world – super villain style.
I tend to skim over alot of the Dragos story line because I got bored with him at about book three. There was also alot of focus on the other couples. And generally I love it when the author will keep us in touch with the past couples, but I guess I just wasn’t feeling it this time.
The hero and heroine, I really couldn’t connect with. I don’t think there was enough time for the couple to develop in the story. There was alot of other things going on with everyone else and almost felt their story was put back a little bit. It felt like one moment they hated each other, the next they’re in bed and sharing feelings and are helplessly in love. As for Tavia, we don’t get to know her all that well. She is kind of a blank page; Chase on the other hand is a well developed character.
I wanted this to be more upbeat, to have some more sneaky giggles and sexy talk going on. I felt it was more brooding and dark and I guess that this isn’t at all the authors fault, this is what the rest of the series is like, but I haven’t read anything darker like this is ages and I guess I have grown out of it.
The book as a whole wasn’t bad, and I know as I’m reading over my review it does sound like I’m bagging the book – but truly it read well and was a fairly smooth way to finish up a series. I am assuming this is the last in the series. The ending was very gory and bathed in blood and was not fulfilling for me in terms of Chase and Tavia.
If you have read the series, then read this book. There are countless reviewers who love this book. I however can only offer three stars. Let’s hope that if Adrian decides to continue with the Breed series, she goes back to her roots.
