"Small Press Treasures" Blog Hop

Over the course of the past year, the ladies here at S,E,R’s have had the pleasure of reading some really awesome books by some super fabulous authors. And to our surprise,a lot of these books came from Small press and independent authors.Well it comes as no surprise to us now that an incredible book can be found beyond the major publishers. So  for the next week we are very excited to put the spotlight on these authors who have commanded our attention, made us take notice, and turned us into a bunch of squealing  fan girls awaiting their next book! (These authors are mentioned in no particular order)

The path that was laid out before us started with a Sassy, snarky empath named Piper Anast. Rachel Firasek took us on her journey with Piper and her unique crime fighting skills along with the sexy Slade, and left us clamoring for the next book.  Firasek also introduced us to her creative Curse of the Phoenix series and gave us a  new world, and characters to love.
As our journey into the unknown continued we discovered  Mrs. E.L. James who brought us the lusty, naughty love story between Ana Steele, Christian Grey and his “fifty shades of fucked up“.  Fifty ruled our thoughts to the point it was hard to wrap our minds around the next books on our TBR.
Mrs. Carolyn Crane….. How fantastic is this author who took us into an awesome Urban Fantasy world and gave us a unique story with Justine Jones a hypochondriac who learns to use her hypochondria to work for her instead of against her, with the help of the sexy Packard.  Crane gives us a colorful cast of characters to love, and the wait for Head Rush was exhausting, but well worth it!
Along the way, we happened to come across a  book by Debra Anastasia called Poughkeepsie.WOW!! We could go on for days about this fabulous lady who tells us a heartwarming story of love, courage, heartbreak, loyalty, and self discovery where a young lady falls in love with a homeless man. Mrs. Anastasia’s story is full of some of the funniest most amazing characters, it has left us in dire need of the next story, as well as made our top favorite shelf! She also tells us a story in Crushed Seraphim where good and evil collide and find a love worth sacrificing for, and the devil has never been so sexy!!
J.M. Darhower….. “Sempre”!  This book was an amazing, crazy terrific ride! Darhower took a cause she believes in and centered her story around it, incorporated the Italian Mafia, and the outcome was  SIMPLY FANTASTIC! With a cast of characters that will steal your heart and leave you wanting more, Darhower landed on the top shelf too!
J.A. Saare swept us off to New York with the awesome, outspoken necromancer Rhiannon Murphy, and the super sexy vampire Disco in her PNR novel, Dead Undead and Somewhere in Between.  After leaving us out on that cliff, we were chomping at the bit for the next book. Saare delivered a wild crazy ride with The Renfield Syndrome that did not disappoint!  After throwing us 100 years in to the future and  hanging us out on that cliff again, we are super excited that the next book will be coming soon.
Diving into the world of BDSM Novels,  we found Kallypso Masters new “Rescue Me” series, to be all kinds of toe curling yummy. Love her writing style, which is simply beautiful, and thus makes her one of our most anticipated authors. We love Kally, and can’t wait for the upcoming releases!
To our Surprise, author C.J. Roberts took us to a dark place in Captive in the Dark, her debut full length novel where Livvy is abducted to be used as a pawn in Gabe’s quest for vengeance.  Roberts is an author to watch,  this lady can seriously write! Her sequel Seduced in the Dark, lands on our most anticipated list for 2012.
Laura Hunsaker took us on a time travel adventure with super sexy highlander in Highland Destiny. This was a fast paced, hard to put down novel.  If you enjoy time travel, and historical fiction, you’ll enjoy this one!
Some of our other favorite authors who have brought Greek mythology to the table, and a little PNR is Laura Kaye, her new series Hearts of the Anemoi introduced us to a new series featuring a different tale of Greek Mythology, and Owen Winters will certainly make you lick your lips, and ask for more.Another great author that brings the Greek mythology to the table is Lisa Beth Darling, and her “Of War” series. Darling’s stories are dark, mysterious, and challenging. She will keep you turning the pages, and the stories will stay with you for quite some time. Next, Rosalie Lario, her stories are full of twists and turns, and lots of demonic fun!

Tough Chick Heroines
I love reading about tough chicks. And really, what’s not to love? They’re fun, they’re sassy, they’re not afraid to stand up for themselves. In other words, they’re everything I wish I could be.
I must admit, in real life I can occasionally be a wimp. I’m quiet, I’m shy, and I don’t always stick up for myself (though when I’m in the mood: watch out). J But that’s why, when I pick up a book, I love to read about a heroine who’s got no problem standing up for herself. One who’s quick on her feet and even quicker with her brain.
My list of badass heroines in movies, TV, and/or books is probably a mile long, but I do have some perennial favorites.
Ø  Xena: Warrior Princess. The mother of all badass heroines, Xena was a force to be reckoned with. I remember eagerly sitting down to watch the show every week. It had nonstop action, fun, and a heroine who desperately sought redemption for her past. Over a decade later, I still miss this show.
Ø  Temperance Brennan on Bones. She’s a smart, well-respected scientist, but she also knows how to fight, and she’s not afraid to stand up for herself. Yeah, I totally love her.
Ø  Cat in Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress novels. She’s probably my favorite kickass heroine in a book series. I love her attitude, her potty mouth, and most especially her man: Bones. *sigh*
When I first started writing Mark of the Sylph (Book 2 in the Demons of Infernum paranormal romance series), I knew my heroine was going to be kick-ass. She been through a lot of bad stuff in her life, and demons are to blame. Someone else might have broken, but she chose to focus on fighting back. She’s turned herself into a demon ass-kicking machine. When she meets half-demon Taeg, she tries to kill him. A lot. J But then she discovers that not all demons are evil as she thought, and Taeg is in a category all of his own.
Taeg is desperate to help his pregnant sister-in-law, who is spellbound to a dangerous, indestructible book. He thinks an ancient sword can destroy the book, but it’s hidden by a powerful glamour. As luck would have it, Maya can see through glamours.
Maya is Taeg’s best hope for uncovering the sword. As he fights for her trust, she is forced to acknowledge that, against all odds, she might be falling in love with a demon.
Just for fun, I’m including an excerpt which takes place after Taeg learns about Maya’s ability and tracks her down. Things don’t quite go as Taeg had planned:

Taeg tightened his hold on her wrist until she dropped the dagger. He grabbed her other wrist and pinned it back. “Look at me.”
Yeah, apparently she wasn’t in an accommodating mood. Because instead of listening she jerked her knee up, catching him square in the junk.
“Ooof.” That freaking hurt.
He let go, hands automatically lowering to protect his goods, and she shoved hard on his chest. As he staggered several feet back, she spun and delivered a stunning roundhouse kick that almost had him admiring her form, right before it caught him in the side and sent him sprawling.
“What’s the deal, lady?”
She grabbed the knife and flew at him faster than he would’ve expected from a human.
Taeg shoved off the ground and sidestepped her attack, and recaptured her wrist. He yanked her arm up behind her as he maneuvered behind her back.
“Shit,” Maya cried. The knife clanged to the ground, and he loosened his hold a fraction.
“Stop. I don’t want to hurt you.”
“Yeah. Right.” Her tone made it clear what she thought of that.
Pushing her to the nearest wall, Taeg turned her to face him. He kept one hand on her shoulder and the other on her chin, forcing her to meet his eyes.
“Calm down, Maya.” The familiar hum of energy in his ears told him his charm was doing its thing. “I’m not going to hurt you. I only want to ask you a few questions.”
Her scowl softened long enough for him to assume his power had worked. He let her go and backed up a few steps. “How do you know what I am? Can you see the real me?”
Rather than answering, she lifted a knee and slid one of her dainty hands into her boot. When she withdrew it, she clutched another dagger, a match to the one on the ground. Suddenly the reason for her boots became quite clear. The woman was a freakin’ walking arsenal.
“Oh, shit.”
She kicked off the wall and leapt into the air in a flying move that Jackie Chan would have envied, adjusting the grip on her dagger. Hand high in the air, she aimed for his neck. The woman was clearly determined to remove his head from the rest of his body. Taeg dropped his legs out from under him, hitting the ground hard.
Maya’s legs struck his back as she flew over him. He untangled himself and whirled around, but damn she recovered fast. She tossed her dagger to the side to avoid jabbing herself as she tucked and rolled. Then she jumped to her feet and faced him with both fists up. Her face was almost expressionless, her heavy panting the only indicator she was battling to the death. Damned if his interest wasn’t drawn to her ample chest beneath that tight black top.
She smiled, almost as if she were enjoying herself, and came at him with another kick.
He leapt back to avoid being hit. “Damn it, I’m trying to talk to you, lady.”
I’d love to know what type of heroines you enjoy reading about. Any particular favorite in a movie, television series, or book?

Elenas Review

Half-demon Taeg is desperate to free his pregnant sister-in-law, who is spellbound to an indestructible book that will create an army of the undead. He is convinced that an ancient sword can destroy the book and the spell forever, but this relic has been hidden for a millennia by a powerful glamour. The clock begins to run out on his search when an old rival goes after the book and Teag's family in his quest for revenge.

Librarian Maya Flores has a secret: she's immune to magic and is well aware of the supernatural beings prowling the streets of New York City. Haunted by a brutal demon attack that took her family, she is on a one-woman mission to destroy the evil demons who did it and any others who get in her way.

Maya is Taeg's best hope for uncovering the sword. Unfortunately, she wants nothing more than to kill him. As he fights for her trust and to save his family, she is forced to face the truth that not all demons are evil. And the worst part? She might be falling in love with one, too.

In the previous novel "Blood of the Demon". Brynn is the key; she's an heir and related to an Egyptian priest who's lived over three-thousand years ago. Mammon the evil father of Keegan, Teag, Ronin and Dagan is searching for the "Book of the dead" and needs the Heir to fulfil his mission of raising an army of zombies to rule the world. He’s a greed demon. Mammon desires wealth and power. He won't rest until every human being is distinct and he'll keep moving onto other worlds until everyone them are destroyed. Mammon gets smacked in the face when things don't turn out the way he's planned. Brynn is the key to all the impossible. She has full reign. The Council believed she was no use and to stop mayhem from happening, the brothers were given orders to kill Brynn, and of course Keegan falls for her, so he goes against his brothers and backing out on the Councils orders. It takes some time for his brothers to realize why Keegan chose Brynn over them. Teag wanted to kill Brynn and take the weight of his shoulders. Sacrifices were exchanged, the love and loyalty between everyone in that novel is what you call FAMILY.

So back to this novel “Mark of the Sylph" Leviathos was Mammon's right hand man and he's out to get revenge to steal the book back and fix what Mammon started.

Taeg goes on a mission looking for Leviathos. Teag was convinced Leviathos would try to come after his sister-in-law Brynn and her unborn child. Taeg feels he has a lot to make up for and believes Bryn deserves to live happily. He goes far and beyond to fight and protect his family, no matter what the cost.

Once again these brothers know their way about kidnapping woman for their advantage. Lolz! Teag comes across a witty woman who shows she can't stand him. He has no clue why till he realizes, Maya may be a normal looking human but, she can see behind the facade of mystical creatures glamour. Right off hand he knows he could use her to her advantage on his quest to find a Sword that is to be used to destroy the "Book Of The Dead" It's said that the Excalibur Sword is hidden with glamour so no when can find it. So what does he do? He kidnaps her.

Well, Maya doesn't make Teag's quest easy. She's a little bad ass that makes a good run for Teag's money. I love her! Maya has a potty mouth of a sailor, doesn't take no for an answer. And she definitely doesn't take shit from no one. She can fight just as good as Teag and his brothers. I think at some point she makes then look bad. Ahahaha... And she's a human! Love it!

Maya despises Demons and all for a good reason. As a child at 10years, a few demons noticed that she can see through their glamour, one night these demons came looking for her and the inevitable happens. Maya’s parents and sister were murdered by these demons. They never found her. So as you can see, Maya and Teag did not start off with a good start. She understands now, not all demons go along with the meaning "Evil" .Teag wins his way through Maya's heart and she will stop at nothing to protect what's hers. The feeling is mutual. Teag can no longer bite his tongue; he has no desire of being every woman’s man, just one woman, Maya.

Well, after all is said and done. There's definitely an HEA. This book was awesome! I loved it way better than the previous book, "Blood of the Demon” Which wasn't much too my interest. I didn't feel the connection between the H/H and everything was straight forward and to the point. BUT! In all honesty I picked this novel up and it's so much better and different. I can see the major changes in the authors writing. The plot of the story was well put together, and I assure you I felt what was going on in-between the sheets with the H/H it was so darn Hot! I felt the connections with everyone and I sure as heck laughed my tush off numerous times. I would read it all over again.

This is a series I would continue reading, there are two more hot brothers I would love to read on, Ronin and Dagan, who definitely need an HEA :)
