Dare You To (Pushing the Limits #2) by Katie McGarry

Ryan lowers his lips to my ear. "Dance with me, Beth."

"No." I whisper the reply. I hate him and I hate myself for wanting him to touch me again....

"I dare you..."

If anyone knew the truth about Beth Risk's home life, they'd send her mother to jail and seventeen-year-old Beth who knows where. So she protects her mom at all costs. Until the day her uncle swoops in and forces Beth to choose between her mom's freedom and her own happiness. That's how Beth finds herself living with an aunt who doesn't want her and going to a school that doesn't understand her. At all. Except for the one guy who shouldn't get her, but does....

Ryan Stone is the town golden boy, a popular baseball star jock-with secrets he can't tell anyone. Not even the friends he shares everything with, including the constant dares to do crazy things. The craziest? Asking out the Skater girl who couldn't be less interested in him.

But what begins as a dare becomes an intense attraction neither Ryan nor Beth expected. Suddenly, the boy with the flawless image risks his dreams-and his life-for the girl he loves, and the girl who won't let anyone get too close is daring herself to want it all....

Holly's Review

"I dare you to...."

That's usually how all the trouble starts, right?? Well, even though it starts that way, this story was about so much more!

I really loved Beth when I read Pushing the Limits and was so happy to see her get her story!

Beth has had a life no child should ever have to endure, being left by a father who didn't want her with a mother who couldn't deal with life so she turned to drugs and booze and losers! She was placed with her aunt for safety, where she had Noah and Isaiah to look out for her. But tough girl that Beth is, she believes she needs no one and can protect herself as long as she refuses to love anyone or let anyone love her.

I came to this house for safety. They came because the foster care system ran out of homes. We stayed together because we were stray pieces of other puzzles, tired of never fitting.

I think those sentences totally sum up how Beth feels about her situation and herself.

All this changes when circumstances bring her uncle back into her life and he demands custody of her. Her uncle being a former pro baseball player makes Beth a sort of instant celebrity in her new school, which she hates btw! You see, Beth went to this school as a little girl and was ripped away from this school and the town when her life turned upside down years earlier. Now she's back and some of the players are the same but the game, and the girl, have definitely changed.

Enter Ryan, who is the schools up and coming baseball star and the boy who, on a dare, tried to get Beth's number a few nights before at a Taco Bell!! To say Beth is leery of Ryan and his intentions is an understatement. Ryan is asked by Beth's uncle to show her around and he is about as happy about it as Beth. But, as the story proceeds, Beth learns that Ryan and his family are not as perfect as she believed and he is just as confused as she is. They form a tentative friendship that slowly becomes something more, something they both need and are able to give each other!

There are times when you stand on the cusp of moments so huge, you know you'll remember them forever. This is that moment for me and Ryan. I'm not seducing him. He's not seducing me. Instead, we're choosing to be together.

This was just a really friggin' good story! I don't know how else to describe it. I can't wait for the next book. We see Isaiah get his heart broken in this book, because of course, he has been in love with Beth since, well, forever!! I really want to see him get his HEA, because I just loved him and he deserves it!!
