Caught in the crossfire, and forced to face their possible impending deaths when a disgruntled employee opens fire at their office, co-workers Shelby and Russ make a deal while hiding under a desk: if Russ dies, she’ll take care of his six year-old daughter Annabelle, if Shelby dies, he’ll look after her terminally ill father.
Annabelle needs a mom; Shelby’s dad will die happy if she marries. Once they escape their situation, a marriage of convenience seems like the perfect answer, and they hold a quick wedding, intending a life of separate bedrooms and shared responsibilities, with friendship and companionship, but not love.
As they spend more time together, their bond becomes more than either bargained for. But when misfortune strikes, their newfound love is put to the test.

5 Worthy Stars! An EXCELLENT friends-to-lovers story!
Wow! I can't even begin to express how this novella made me feel. The more I think about it afterward, the more I fall in love with Forever's Promise. At first, I was a little hesitant to read this story, since I find a lot of marriage of convenience stories set in modern times to be a little forced and unconvincing. I loved that Forever's Promise didn't involve family inheritances, green cards, or business deals. It is first and foremost a friends-to-lovers story that surrounds a realistic and practical solution. It's written with so much warmth that your heart will squeeze at several moments!
Friends since college, Shelby and Russ make promises to each other under a desk while a gunman opens fire in their office building. After surviving the incident Russ, a single dad who no longer believes in love thanks to his selfish ex-wife, wants to find a mother for his young daughter. When the opportunity suddenly presents itself, he convinces Shelby to marry him. A marriage of friendship and companionship would be all they need, right? Both have been living lonely lives. The decision to marry Russ doesn't come lightly for Shelby. I have to give nods to Joya Fields for handling all the emotions involved so delicately. I was totally convinced that, yes, they should marry!
“Don't worry, Miss Shelby. Daddies are strong like superheroes.” -Annabelle
I need to mention Russ's six-year-old daughter, Annabelle. She is the bright, adorable star of this story. She is truly daddy's little girl. Really, how can you not root for a man who will do anything for his daughter!
Forever's Promise was a surprise hit for me. If you're looking for a quick, heart-warming read, this story would most definitely be worth your time. For those of you who like a little heat, I'll leave you with this image...Russ playing the drums...shirtless! Oh, yes, that particular scene was nice!
