The Dark Earl - Virginia Henley

The Dark Earl http://www.virginiahenley.com/

A sensual new Victorian romance from the New York Times bestselling author of The Irish Duke.
When Lady Harriet Hamilton and Viscount Thomas meet, Thomas finds her outspoken, and yet, quite a beauty. But Thomas is committed to restoring the family holdings, not chasing a wife. If only Harry wasn't making herself right at home...

This is the first story I have read from Virginia Henley, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. But I was drawn to the name of this story, like a moth to a flame. The story begins with, Thomas Anson watching as everything around him in his family home is auctioned off to pay for his fathers, the Earl of Lichfield – gambling debts. Here it is where he meets Harriet, the daughter of the Duke of Abercorn. It isn’t until 10 years later that Thomas and Harriet meet again. Thomas has vowed to restore Shugborough (the family home) to its rightful state and is in pursuit of all the auctioned off pieces. But when he is reunited with Harry, he realizes that she just might be the solution he has been looking for.
I have read a lot of historical romances in my time, but never have I read one with such bluntness. Our heroine is the epitome of the perfect untouched virginal girl. She is beautiful, blunt and very used to having everything and everyone do as she pleases; Harry was very comfortable in herself and refreshingly comfortable with the idea of coupling. At time I felt that she was almost too perfect and easily became un-relatable.
Thomas on the other hand is so focused on his task that world around him almost doesn’t exist. Both Thomas and Harry played with each other’s heart strings for a lengthy time in this book but I was pleased to see that when they both realized they loved each other, neither were afraid to admit it.
Together the couple were priceless. They were like two halves coming together with the same goal in mind. Beautiful.
It was a lovely romantic historical romance with a very interesting and different writing style than what I am used too. The plot of the story wasn’t too dramatic, and the whole story carried along smoothly.
I would recommend this book to someone who wanted a swept of their feet romance.
