Dark Rival (Masters of Time, #2)Dark Rival – Brenda Joyce
This is the second instalment in the Masters of Time series.  In this instalment tells us the story of Royce, Malcolm’s uncle.
The basis of the story is, after losing his first wife to a demon, Royce vows to never love again. But when he meets Allie he finds himself fighting that vow. Allie is a healer, whose calling is to save people from evil. After meeting Royce they come together, not so amicably, to hunt down and fight an evil demon. There is a lot of time travel that you have to get your head around, but I never felt confused and understood the leaps completely.
Ahh, Royce. What a stubborn, stubborn man! He is a fantastic character but he is so intense and complicated. I don’t think he had a good old chuckle once throughout the book.  He is described as your usual barbarian highlander, with dashingly good looks.  But Royce would not and could not let go of his past. Royce is what saved this book from being a major disappointment.
Allie, UGH!! This woman frustrated me to no end!! I felt like I was reading about a whiney teenage girl who had just been dumped by her boyfriend. Allie fell in love with Royce after 24 hours and was so certain of their love, but every step of the way she kept getting that love crushed by Royce and she pretty much had a tansy about it. I felt she was immature, and would run head first into situations without thinking. I was less than sympathetic towards her in the least.
The story its self was choreographed very well. The leaping of time could have caused a lot of chronological chaos, but was done in a way that wasn’t hard to understand. The secondary characters are always great. Aidan is the life of these books, and I cannot wait to read his book.  We get appearances from Malcolm and Claire who were from the first book and new characters have been introduced that it has been made clear are to have bigger roles in upcoming books.
Can’t wait to read on in the series, just hope our heroines improve from Childish to mature.
